KTM Direct-Injected 2t discussion
Posted by desflurane on January 30, 2012
I ran across this YouTube video a while ago, but then couldn’t find it again. For those interested in the development of the direct-injected two stroke engine, this is VERY interesting.
KTM engine designer Sebastian Sekira is interviewed regarding the changes appearing on the 2012 bikes with emphasis on the advantages of electronically controlled fuel injection.
At 4:25 the interviewer asks when we can expect to see the direct-injected two strokes. Sebastian dodges the question a little bit, but his answer is still very telling in my opinion. It seems to indicate that KTM is very close to marketing their system – perhaps for the 2013 model year!
See what you think:
Even without the two stroke discussion I think the video is pretty interesting, and it makes fuel injection sound very appealing – no need to re-jet to compensate for altitude changes (particularly important for two strokes), hard starts after tipping over and all the other little annoyances that carburetors bring to the table. While direct-injection will supposedly not bring significant performance gains, I think that not having to swap fiddly little bits of brass in and out to get the bike to run properly will be a vast improvement.
